- Answer two prompts out of the five:
- Physicial-assisted death: How does james rachels defend the morality of active euthenasia? In what ways does he think it is unlike passive euthenasia? What are some objections to VAE that John Keown describes? Does rachelâs argument rely on autonomy? In what ways? How might rachels respond or critize Keown?
- Abortion. What is Judith Jarvis Thomsonâs position on abortion? How does she argue for that position? Describe Don Marquisâs argument that abortion is unethical. What are some potential issues with either view? How might the authors respond to these criticisms?
- Advance Directives. Ronald Dworkin and Rebecca Dresser have different views about the appropriate scope of advance directives in cases of dementia. Describe this dispute. What is dworkinâs argument? In what ways does dresser think Dworkinâs argument fails?
- Paternalism & Public Health. Libetarians such as Jessica Flanigan argue against coercive public health policies. A different view, held by libertarian paternalists is that we should ânudgeâ people to do certain things, but we shouldât take away options. Sarah Conly defends yet another view - coercive paternalism - which involves taking away options. What are the main arguments for each? What are some ways these points apply to health care?
- Genetic Screening. What is the difference between the welfare model of disability and the mere difference model of disability? Explain Dena Davisâs argument regarding genetic screening. What is the main objection to her argument? Explain Jeff McMahanâs arugment. What implication does McMahan think his argument has for the disability debate
