Luck Egalitarianism

The belief that fairness should be determined only by the choices people make. Excludes external factors like Luck.

• Person born into poverty given same consideration as person outside of poverty if both make the same choices in life

Formal Definition

With:

• $F(\cdot |c,\pi )$ as the cumulative distribution of utility at circumstance $c$ and effort $\pi$
• $c$ is the circumstances beyond ones control (Luck)
• $0\le \pi \le 1$ is the $\pi$-th quartile of the distribution of effort of individuals under circumstance $\pi$ $F(\cdot |c,\pi )=F(\cdot |c^{\prime },\pi )$ In other words, luck does not matter
